Pune Metro (Marathi: पुणे मेट्रो) is a proposed metro rail project in the city of Pune, India, and its surrounding Metropolitan Area. The preparation of project Report work was undertaken by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in 2007, and has identified three prospective routes in the area. The project is expected to be commissioned by 2013. Though, initial plans were to build a few underground and rest elevated. But, since the people of Pune did not want the elevated routes in Pune reasons being, 1. Pune's roads cannot bear more traffic that will be due to the construction of elevated routes and 2. there were some roads that were too narrow for the legs of elevated routes, it's decided that all the routes (in all phases) in the city would be underground (though the map and the details of phases show elevated routes.) In November 2011, Maharashtra Government declared that all the routes will be underground. [1]

Phases of the Project

First phase[2]

The two routes that have been identified for the first phase are:

  1. Pimpri - Chinchwad - Swargate, via Agriculture college (16.5 km, elevated/underground from Range Hills)
  2. Vanaz - Ramwadi, via Deccan Gymkhana, Yerawada (14.9 km, elevated)

Second phase[3]

Second phase of the project will contain two lines and the extension of first phase:

  1. ASI to Hinjewadi via Aundh (18 km elevated)
  2. Deccan Gymkhana to Bund Garden Via Swargate and Race Course (11 km under ground)
  3. Extension of lines from Pimpri-Chinchwad to Nigdi and Swargate to Katraj (11.5 km elevated)
  4. Extension of lines from Aundh to Hinjewadi and Ramwadi to Kharadi Naka (13 km elevated)
  5. Extension of lines from Ramwadi to Viman Nagar Airport (elevated)

Third phase

Third phase will complete the project at once and it will contain the followling line:

  1. Agriculture college - Warje via JM road and Karve road (9 km elevated)
  2. Extension from Bund Garden to Vishrantwadi (under ground)
  3. Extension from Race Course to Hadapsar (Elevated)
  4. Link from Bhosari to Moshi to link with Moshi-Chakan-new Pune international airport metro line. (Elevated)

First line of Pune Metro will run from Pimpri-Chinchwad to Swargate. This line will be elevated till Range Hills and then will be underground up to Swargate. This line will be further extended to Nigdi and Katraj / Hadapsar. This route will go via Bhosari, Khadki and Shivajinagar.[4]

The Second line of Pune metro rail will connect Ramwadi to Vanaz via Mangalwar Peth and Deccan Gymkhana. This line will further be extended up Viman Nagar / Kharadi and Lohegaon Airport.[5] The expected statics of this line are as follows:-

Technical side

The proposed routes are to be built mostly on elevated rails, with underground routes and extensions to follow in future phases.[8]

The proposed fare structure in 2013-14 is to be a minimum of 7 for distances less than 2 km, and a maximum of 24 for distances above 30 km.
